After the huge success of the fourth movie, Paramount decided to make another series finally. It put the new starship Enterprise 70 years into the future, into the 24th century, with an all-new crew. Most fans were a bit careful at first, because everything was new. But The Next Generation became the show that lifted Star Trek to a new heigth of popularity. The show ran from 1987 until 1994 and 178 episodes were filmed. In 1989 came Star Trek IV, in 1991 Star Trek VI and in 1994 the seventh movie called Star Trek: Generations.

Na het grote succes van de vierde speelfilm, besloot Paramount eindelijk om een nieuwe serie te maken.
